What causes computer related injuries?

Productive eye distance
When you work in a computer-dependent job, you must be able to see the screen in order to be productive. Sounds simple enough. And in a way it is. When you first sit down at your desk, your eyes attempt to adjust to the distance to the computer monitor. When we obtain this focal distance we tend to lock our bodies into a fixed position to maintain this distance. We call this the “productive eye distance” or “fixed distance.” Locking our bodies (especially our backs and necks) in position for long periods of time can lead to computer related injury.

The weight of your arms
The weight of your arms is approximately 15 pounds, generally about 10% of your total body weight. Workplace studies show that people tend to sit in a basically unchanged position for much of the workday, which usually involves stretching the arms (carried by muscles in the back and shoulders) in front to reach their keyboards. There is literally no way to make this position comfortable for long periods of time using a conventional desk and chair. Wrist pads and other accessories can provide some relief, but the very nature of keyboarding puts substantial stress on the back and neck.

Dropping a 19” monitor on your foot
Dropping a very heavy 19” monitor on your foot is another surefire way to suffer from a computer-related injury. We strongly recommend avoiding this if at all possible.
